ACIS organized a very successful APAAACI APAPARI congress in 2010 and is very active in the science and clinical development of allergy. We are proud to have Bernard Thong from ACIS as our board member and several ACIS members in our many committees. We wish them continued success.
The Allergy and Clinical Immunology Society Singapore (ACIS) was established in 2005. Their journey started when the Singapore Society of Immunology and Rheumatology (SSIR) was established. SSIR, established in 1976, took on the task of promoting the education of doctors in Singapore on allergic and immunologic disorders. Following the return of Prof Chng Hiok Hee, the founding President of ACIS (2005-2011), from her training with Prof Andrew Saxon at the Division of Clinical Immunology and Allergy, University of California Los Angeles in 1989, the society was renamed the Singapore Society of Immunology, Allergy and Rheumatology (SSIAR) in January 1990 to reflect this added role.
During the same decade, Prof Lee Bee Wah, ACIS’ second president (2012-2013) completed her research fellowship in the Division of Allergy/Immunology at the Children’s Hospital in Boston, USA from 1986-1988. Both Prof Chng and Prof Lee remain advisors to ACIS. In 2004 that it was time to form a separate society for both adult and paediatric clinical immunology/allergy. This led to the separation of SSIAR into the Singapore Society of Rheumatology (SSR) and ACIS.
A major achievement of the society was the successful organization of the 8th Asia Pacific Congress of Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology (APCAACI) 2010 held in conjunction with Asia-Pacific Association of Paediatric Asthma, Respirology and Immunology (APAPARI) Congress 2010 from 6-9 November 2010 at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre. An Allied Health Course and Postgraduate Clinical Immunology Course were also held. A total of 1,600 delegates attended the congress.
At present, ACIS comprises of 56 members from various specialties which take care of growing number of patients with allergic conditions. They also co-host activities with allied health care professionals such as dietitians to disseminate and enhance the knowledge of managing allergic conditions, as well as empower care-givers to better care for individuals with allergic disorders in the community. We continue to engage with our health care organisations to improve the care of food allergy anaphylaxis training to preschool teachers and primary school teacher. Going forward, we hope to increase our membership size and play a bigger role to cater to the needs of our allergic and immunodeficient patients.
