Past President of APAAACI (1997-1998)
It gives me immense grief to share with you the news of the sad demise of Prof. Sohei Makino, MD, Ph.D, Past President of APAAACI (1997-1998) and a leader in the field of allergy, asthma and clinical immunology in Japan, Asia and worldwide. Prof. Makino passed away on August 4th, 2020, at the age of 89 years and is survived by his wife and a son and daughter.
Prof. Makino served as the Professor/ Chairman of the Internal Medicine Department of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Dokkyo Medical University, until his retirement after which he served as Professor Emeritus. He continued his work at the Jobu Hospital of Respiratory Medicine as the Hospital Director.
In addition to being the President of APAAACI, he served as the President of the Japanese Society of Allergology, and was active in several global organizations like INTERASMA, GARD, WAO, GINA, GOLD. His scientific work especially on bronchial hyperrespnsiveness led to several new scientific evidences. He mentored many current leaders in allergy and clinical immunology in Japan and in Asia Pacific. He established the WHO Collaborating Center for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Respiratory Diseases at Dokkyo Medical University and conducted collaborative research projects in the Asian countries especially on air pollution and chronic respiratory diseases. He played a key role in the development of Japanese guidelines for asthma and COPD.
Most recently, he contributed to the APAAACI History book launched at the 30th Anniversary celebration of APAAACI in Beijing, Sept 2019. He was extremely pleased to be awarded the APAAACI Recognition Award for Outstanding contributions to the establishment of the organization and as Past President.
Besides his outstanding career and numerous contributions he was well known for his humility and compassion. He touched the lives of patients and communities in profound ways as a clinician and health leader. We in APAAACI and all the Asian countries deeply mourn the loss of a great leader not only in Japan but also in the Asia Pacific region and globally.
We pray for him and express our deepest condolences to his family.
We in APAAACI will do our best to take forward the legacy he has left behind, and do our very best for the organization and the region.
